ChatGPT rank tracking

The ChatGPT rank tracker for brands and agencies.

We track how your brand ranks and gets cited when ChatGPT answers the questions your buyers actually ask — checked fresh every day, with history and competitor comparisons, not a one-time screenshot.

Definition

What is ChatGPT rank tracking?

ChatGPT rank tracking measures whether your brand shows up when someone asks ChatGPT a buying-stage question — and just as importantly, whether the answer treats you as credible enough to name and cite, or leaves you out while naming a competitor instead. Because ChatGPT can either draw on what it learned during training or run a live web search mid-conversation, the same question can produce two very different answers depending on which mode it uses, which is why a single spot-check tells you far less than a tracked history.

How it works with DabaRank

From buyer question to tracked ranking in three steps.

  1. 01

Write the buying questions your prospects actually type

Load in the real pre-purchase questions your buyers ask ChatGPT — both the kind that trigger a live browsing pass and the quick ones ChatGPT answers straight from memory.

  2. 02

DabaRank runs them against ChatGPT every morning

We send each prompt to ChatGPT daily and capture the full response, including whether it answered from training data or ran a live web search to compose it.

  3. 03

See your ranking, citations, and who else got named

Track your position in the answer, which pages ChatGPT actually linked to when it searched, and which competitors it named beside you — with a running history from day one.

How ChatGPT decides what to cite

Not every ChatGPT answer even has a source.

ChatGPT doesn't search the web before answering every prompt. For a lot of questions it responds straight from what the model learned during training — no citation, just whatever it “remembers” about your category. For other prompts, especially ones that sound time-sensitive or comparison-shaped, it triggers a live browsing pass and links specific pages. That distinction matters for optimization: you can't improve your citation rate on a prompt where ChatGPT never searches in the first place, so tracking has to flag which of your prompts are browsing-triggered and which aren't.

When ChatGPT does browse, it leans heavily on Bing's index rather than building its own — being indexed by Bing is close to a prerequisite for showing up in a cited answer, not a nice-to-have.

Beyond ChatGPT

Your buyers don't stop at ChatGPT.

We track 8 major AI platforms and growing — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, and Google AI Overviews— because Perplexity and Gemini retrieve from different sources and apply different citation rules than ChatGPT does. In research published by Profound (a competitor of ours — see our comparison) on 100,000 prompts run against both platforms, only about 11% of cited domains showed up in both ChatGPT's and Perplexity's answers — so ranking well in ChatGPT tells you almost nothing about your standing on Perplexity.

Why it matters

Being recommended by ChatGPT drives real demand.

ChatGPT reported roughly 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, and a growing share of them ask it for a recommendation before they ever type a query into a search engine. If your brand isn't the one it names — or a competitor is named instead — that's demand you'll never see land in your funnel. You can't fix a gap you're not tracking.

FAQ

Common questions about ChatGPT rank tracking.

How often are rankings updated?
Daily. Because ChatGPT can answer the same prompt two different ways depending on whether it searches or not, we re-run every prompt each morning and log which mode produced the answer, not just whether your brand was mentioned.
Does ChatGPT's browsing mode change what gets cited?
A lot. Memory-only answers can't cite anything, so no amount of on-page work changes them. Browsing-triggered answers lean heavily on Bing's index, so being indexed there is close to a prerequisite for citation, not an optional extra (source: Ahrefs). We flag which mode ChatGPT used on each run so you know which prompts are actually winnable.
Does it track citations too, not just ranking?
Yes. For every browsing-triggered answer, we log which sources ChatGPT actually linked alongside the ranking — so you can see whether you're winning on your own pages or being cited through third-party coverage instead.
What about other AI platforms, not just ChatGPT?
DabaRank tracks 8 major AI platforms — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, and Google AI Overviews — from the same dashboard, and adds more over time, since buyers don't only ask ChatGPT.
